Passover at Congregation Tifereth Israel

Passover (Pesach) is the festival of freedom, commemorating the Jewish people's exodus from Egypt. At Congregation Tifereth Israel in Jackson Heights, Queens, we celebrate this transformative story with community Seders, daily services, and the warmth of shared tradition. Whether you're hosting your own Seder or looking for a place to experience one, our synagogue offers multiple opportunities to observe Passover meaningfully.

From the first Seder night when we gather around tables laden with matzah, maror (bitter herbs), and the Seder plate, through eight days of freedom celebration, our Jackson Heights community comes together to relive the journey from slavery to liberation. Join us for our community Seders where everyone has a seat at the table.

About the Passover Seder

What is a Seder?

The Seder is a ritual feast marking the beginning of Passover. We retell the Exodus story through readings from the Haggadah, eat symbolic foods, sing songs, and share a festive meal. It's an interactive, multi-generational celebration that brings the ancient story to life.

Who should attend our community Seder?

Our Seder is perfect for singles, couples, families, students, travelers, or anyone who wants to experience Passover in community. Whether you don't have family nearby, prefer not to host, or simply want to celebrate with our Jackson Heights congregation, you have a place at our table.

What about the rest of Passover?

Passover lasts eight days, with special observances on the first two and last two days. We hold morning services at 9:30 AM throughout the holiday, including the special Yizkor memorial service on the final day. These services provide structure and community throughout the week of freedom.

Do I need Passover experience to attend?

No prior experience needed. Our Seders are designed to be accessible and engaging for everyone, from Passover veterans to first-timers. We provide Haggadahs (the text we read) and guide everyone through the rituals and their meanings.

How do I RSVP for the Seder?

Contact us as soon as possible to reserve your seats. We need an accurate headcount for meal preparation. There is a modest cost to cover the Seder meal expenses.

Where can I get kosher for Passover food in Queens?

Contact Rabbi Pape for recommendations on where to find kosher for Passover products in the Queens area, including nearby kosher supermarkets and butchers.
